Overview

Nurvv’s ambition is clear, to become the leading sports technology brand. They plan to disrupt the fitness tracker market with a new kind of sports wearable technology that tracks athletic performance and technique through smartsole sensors. Targeted towards advanced level runners, the smartsoles capture data analytics otherwise unavailable through fitness trackers. What makes Nurvv’s product unique from its competitors is volume of data and level of accuracy it is able to generate.

Working alongside runners, sports scientists and technicians, I lead the design of iOS, Watch OS and Android applications to capture and track the data.

The discovery
Understanding the runners needs and behaviours

Working within a small design team we focused our attention on the runners, learning about how they train, what motivates them and how they work towards realising their ambitions. We ran workshops and conducted market research to better understand the runners requirements and we worked with sports scientists to generate data-driven insights.

The process
Ideate, prototype, test and repeat

Adopting a lean approach I lead the team through the conceptual phase, we sketched and prototype loads of ideas that we continuously shared with our runners, the successful ideas were prototyped into code for further validation. At the same time we explored the visual design language considering the UI, functional elements, and interactive behaviours across devices.

The solution
Designing what runners want to know

Synthesising our insights we discovered runners mostly focus on maintaining fitness levels, avoiding injury and running faster. With this in mind, we designed the user experience so that runners can set personalised targets and create goals, as well as receive detailed breakdown on their performance with personalised information on where improvements can be made.

Helping improve fitness whilst tracking performance

One of Nurvv’s key differentiators from their market competitors is the ability to provide insights that can help runners minimise injury risk. Working alongside sport scientists we synthesised key data points on the runners performance into easily digestible visual representations as well as conversational guidance on where they can improve.

Providing detailed analysis

With a wealth of data available, we designed the application with different levels of analysis, allowing the runners to deep dive into their performance, running health, technique and training load, and provide the ability the compare running performances over different routes.

Cross-device experience

The biggest request from the runners was for the app to be available on the Apple watch, we made this a priority for the product launch with Garmin watch integration coming in a later sprint.

The result
Launching at CES 2020

The product and app were launch at CES 2020 gaining wide recognition within the fitness and wearable technology market. It has since featured in key publications like Wired, Runners World and Forbes and is currently on sale through the Apple website.
